The den Bleyker family were earlier settlers to the so-called Dutch "kolonie" in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Paulus den Bleyker had come to the small community of Kalamazoo with his family and fellow immigrants in 1850, settled there, and commenced a life of farming, real estate dealings in Ottawa and Kalamazoo counties, and other business activities.
